Anita Guerra’s exhibition, "Queridos," is now on display in the Atrium entrance of The Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University.

Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture is hosting “Queridos,” a multimedia exhibition by Cuban-American artist Anita Guerra, in the Atrium of the Tyler building. The exhibition is presented in partnership with Temple University Rome and is free to visit during building hours.

“Queridos” is the typical Spanish salutation on letters, such as those written during her family’s year-long separation in 1961 during their exodus from Castro´s Revolution in Cuba. The artist and her six siblings were abruptly moved from their home in Havana to St. Vincent’s and Mother Cabrini orphanages in Philadelphia.

The show includes paintings, drawings, monotypes printed on Cuban newspapers, vintage photographs, letters, embroideries, and a documentary co-produced and edited by Alberto Nappi about her father, Cuban architect Juan Ignacio Guerra. Also featured is a video interview with the artist’s mother, Josefina Recio.

The exhibit follows Guerra’s previous shows in Rome and Havana and continues her exploration of identity, memory, and displacement. Many of the works were inspired by personal artifacts, family photos, and return visits to Cuba between 2015 and 2020.

A Temple alum, Guerra earned both her undergraduate and MFA degrees in painting from the university. “Queridos” serves as a tribute to her family, her Cuban roots and her connection to Philadelphia and Rome.
